HUZZAH FOR DEBUTS! Aren’t they the most fun? I love being able to discover new authors, and I love just as much being amazed at all the awesome story-telling talent it STILL OUT THERE, being discovered every day. This is obviously not a knock on established authors, mind you. But debuts get me a different kind of excited, and these 10 2013 debuts in particular.

Book cover for The Flame in the Mist by Kit Grindstaff

The Flame in the Mist by Kit Grindstaff (April 9, 2013 from Delacorte)

Woot! This fantasy debut sounds kind of awesome, what with prophecies, ghosts, golden rats, secret identities, and a country that’s perma-misty, which is CREEPY, all adds up to AWESOME. (I don’t even know, but I’m totally drinking the kool-aid right now)

Book cover for Nantucket Blue by Leila HowlandNantucket Blue by Leila Howland (May 7, 2013 from Disney Hyperion)

Does this cover not look like sweet, swoony summer lovin’ to the max?! Obviously, there’s also some other more intense things going on–like a girl who is dealing with the aftermath of ย family tragedy who has to work to support her summer. But there’s also a boy who complicates things in that tingly way that boys do.

Book cover for Rump by Liesl Shurtliff

Rump: The True Story of Rumplestiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff (April 9, 2013 from Alfred Knopf)

Holla, Rump! This book is exactly what you think it is: it’s the childhood story of one Rumplestiltskin. Also, MIDDLE GRADE. I die.

book cover for the art of wishing by Lindsay ribar

The Art of Wishing by Lindsay Ribar (March 21, 2013 from Dial BFYR)

I’ve shouted this one out before because it sounds adorable: young girl finds a genie, makes wishes while falling for said genie, and is cute and heart-fluttery overall. Also, Lindsay Ribar is a Jersey girl. PROPS FOREVER.

Book cover for Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson

Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson (March 12, 2013 from Random House Children’s)

The Bluebeard tale is actually really dark and unsettling, friends. You know, what with the man who takes women and marries them and tells them they can have LITERALLY anything they want, they just can’t go into this one room in his house, which of course they all do, at which point, Bluebeard KILLS THEM AND KEEPS THEIR DEAD BODIES. I’m really intrigued by this Southern Gothic retelling, which takes place on a plantation.

Book cover for Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger

Etiquette & Espionage: Finishing School #1 by Gail Carriger (February 5, 2013 from Little, Brown)

Gail Carriger is no newbie author, friends, but this is her YA debut. I don’t always gravitate towards steampunk, but something about this one tickles my fancy. It’s probably the school part. And also the spy/assassin part. Because what else would young girls in Victorian England who like to dismantle clocks and such need to learn in school aside from normal finishing school stuff? Obviously.

book cover for how my summer went up in flames by jennifer salvato doktorski

How My Summer Went Up in Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski (May 7, 2013 from Simon Pulse)

Don’t tease me with a road trip, friends. But a road trip that is the result of a restraining order because the main character sets her cheating ex-bf’s car on fire? LULZ this sounds awesome.

book cover for legacy of the clockwork key by Kristin bailey

Legacy of the Clockwork Key: The Secret Order of Modern Amusementists #1 by Kristin Bailey (March 5, 2013 from Simon Pulse)

What’s that? Is this a series about a secret order? I’M IN. Because this is also a book about a dangerous invention and the only girl who can destroy it. There’s deadly secrets, mystery, and a stablehand. LOVE stablehands. Very excited about this one, which is also another steampunk. Go figure.

book cover for hooked by Liz fichera

Hooked by Liz Fichera (January 31, 2013 from Harlequin Teen)

Native American girl winds up on the golf team at her high school and ends up butting heads (and maybe uglies) with the resident big man on campus, who kind of hates her a little bit at first because she took his best friend’s spot on the team. Guys, this is a book about THE GOLF TEAM. I’m hoping for at least one solid Caddyshack joke. And also probably some really interesting racial and cultural elements, too.

book cover for The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd

The Madman’s Daughter: The Madman’s Daughter #1 by Megan Shepherd (January 29, 2013 from Balzer + Bray)

THIS ONE. Sounds epically creepy. I’ve never read The Island of Dr. Moreau, but I’m completely intrigued by the idea of a girl trying to get out of her father’s shadow without be branded by his crazy, only to wind up embroiled in it anyway.

  1. I loved How My Summer Went Up in Flames! ๐Ÿ™‚ My TTT list: http://aliceinreaderland.wordpress.com/2013/01/14/debuts/

    Alice @ Alice in Readerland

  2. I have actually not seen Caddyshack so I cannot confirm if there are any references but I did really like Hooked. It actually reminded me a lot of Pushing the Limits and I’m very interested to start seeing reviews of it.

    • Oooh, I liked Pushing the Limits! I’m looking forward to Hooked. I’m really intrigued to see what happens with the Native American angle, if anything.

  3. Half of these are already on my I NEED THESE BOOKS NOW list! I am hoping to get approved for Strands of Bronze and Gold from NG!! Also Legacy of the Clockwork Key because I also love secret orders and stablehands :]

    • Strands of Bronze and Gold sounds so good, right? I feel like it’s going to be creepy awesome! And I’m pretty stoked for Legacy of Clockwork Key, too, for the same reasons you are (maybe a little *teeny* bit extra for the stablehand. I don’t know why, but that gets me excited!) ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Nantucket Blue! Yay! I can’t wait for that one too!

  5. I can’t wait to read How My Summer went Up in Flames too, it sounds soo good! Great list! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I love that she goes on a roadtrip because she went cray on her ex-boyfriend and set fire to his car. That’s a spunky character right there! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. I am really interested in Madman’s Daughter as well!

  7. The Flame in the Mist is one I’ve never heard of, but it sounds AWESOME. I mean, you can’t ask for much more awesomeness in a fantasy! Also, Legacy of the Clockwork Key must now be added to my list as well…

    • I’m really looking forward to The Flame in the Mist! I’m totally intrigued by those rats! Even though rats kind of gross me out. And Clockwork Key has so many great elements, I’ve got my fingers crossed!

  8. A bunch of these are on my list. I really can’t wait to read Nantucket Blue over the summer. It sounds absolutely perfect for a summer read.

    • Totally agree. Shame that I’d be so preoccupied with getting sand in my hair and elsewhere to thoroughly enjoy being in a real-life version of that cover, lol! I can almost tell already that I’m going to love it.

  9. Oooh ,I have The Art of Wishing and Etiquette & Espionage on my list too! ๐Ÿ˜€ Great one! Rump is on my TBR. Happy reading ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Don’t they sound fun and super?! I’ve not read too much steampunk, but I’m looking forward to expanding my horizon’s this year! Thanks for stopping by!

  12. I included Strands of Bronze & Gold and The Madman’s Daughter on my list, but now I’m totally adding Nantucket Blue and Etiquette & Espionage. Is it bad that I was totally drawn to the covers first? Because I so was. Glad the descriptions sound just as interesting!

    • Nantucket Blue just looks like swoony summer goodness and I can’t wait for it. I’m TOTALLY drawn to the covers, too, so don’t sweat that one bit!
