Stacking the ShelvesWeeks of June 8th-22nd

Lots of things going on this month, friends! Which, as you will all know, is almost over now. I’ve been on a road trip to Canada and I’ve been working and it’s just been hectic. Of course, this doesn’t mean I haven’t been keeping an eye on my books, though. In fact, I managed to snag quite a few this last couple of weeks. I even came home from my road trip with books, so let’s get down to business!

Netgalley

Stacking the ShelvesThe Boy on the Bridge by Natalie Standiford (August 1, 2013 from Scholastic Press). Friends, I am always on the lookout for books that take place in environments, cultures, and time periods that I’ve never encountered before in my reading. This book, which takes place in 1980s Russia during a young American girl’s study abroad, is definitely one of those newbies. Cold War Russia? WHAT? Except not the 1950s spies-and-space race Russia. Like, the Cold War that was just about bubbling over on it’s way OUT Russia. Also, study abroad sounds college-y, and I like that VERY much indeed. (Goodreads)

The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle (August 20, 2013 from Amulet Books). I was a little bummed that I missed this one at BEA this year because it sounds wonderful. I haven’t read Lauren Myracle‘s SHINE yet, but I know it’s supposed to be wonderful, too. But this one sounds VERY much up my alley, and SO MUCH like things that have happened in my life (you know, not ALL of it, but some of it): Wren is struggling to do what she wants for herself instead of what her parents want for her, and she meets a boy and things happen with their souls and fate and unrequited love. YES PLEASE. (Goodreads)

Stacking the ShelvesWill in Scarlet by Matthew Cody (October 8, 2013 from Knopf BFYR). Don’t even tease me with Robin Hood retellings, y’all. DON’T EVEN. If you can’t tell from the title, this one is from the point of view of Will Scarlet. ALSO! There’s a bit with a girl disguised as a boy! And I’m always excited by ANY Robin Hood retelling, but a middle grade reboot featuring Will Scarlet? DYING. (Goodreads)

Hereafter: Shadowlands #2 by Kate Brian (October 1, 2013 from Disney-Hyperion). So I really enjoyed book 1 in this series, SHADOWLANDS, and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s up in Juniper Landing in book 2. Sounds like creepy biz! (Goodreads)

Shadow and Bone: Grisha Trilogy #1 by Leigh Bardugo. Loved this one, plus I got a sweet little shout-out on the blogger love page in the back. I AM EXCITE. I actually bought this paperback on my road trip! My sister and I stopped in a Chapters in Toronto, where I snagged this paperback…

What Happened To Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. …and this one! (Sorry, Canada. NO WAY I’m buying hardcovers while I’m in you. The hardcover of SIEGE AND STORM was $20!!). I will slowly but surely purchase these Sarah Dessen paperbacks because I think they’re so cute and contemporary-looking. I own one that I’ve read–THE TRUTH ABOUT FOREVER–and two that I haven’t: this one, and THIS LULLABY.

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. This book by Rainbow Rowell was actually on my TBR for MONTHS before I even heard of ELEANOR & PARK or FANGIRL. It’s an adult contemp about people falling for each other at work, but it’s a little on the sneak: the guy is the computer nerd in the office who has to monitor employee emails for BAD THINGS and winds up falling for a girl in the office based on the emails she shares with a coworker.

Star Cursed: The Cahill Witch Chronicles #2 by Jessica Spotswood. I read this one via my ARC from NetGalley while I was on my road trip and, HELLO, I really liked it. I’m a big fan of the alternate history in this series, as well as the complicated sister relationships, and the political games between the Sisterhood and the Brotherhood are really coming to a head. Review going up this week, friends.

The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler. I read this Ockler via borrowed copy and loved it so much that I had to buy my own. Molli from Once Upon a Prologue told me to read TWENTY BOY SUMMER next–I’m on it, girl!

Siege and Storm: Grisha Trilogy #2 by Leigh Bardugo. The copies of Leigh Bardugo‘s books here are the copies I bought for myself, but never fear, friends who have entered my giveaway! I’ve got yours all ready to go! But SIEGE AND STORM? So good. Better than the first book, and it made me crazy for more.

Kindle/Audio

The Trouble With Flirting by Claire LaZebnik. Kindle deal! Also, EPIC FAIL was breezy and fun, so I’ve been looking forward to this one–it’s a contemporary twist on MANSFIELD PARK!!

The Woodcutter by Kate Danley. OMGGGGGG THIS BOOK SOUNDS AMAZING. It begins with the mysterious murder of Cinderella (!!!), and then one of Odin’s hellhounds goes on the lam, and the Woodcutter, peacekeeper between humans and fae, has to figure out WTF is going on.

Cate of the Lost Colony by Lisa Klein. I’m sorry, did someone mention the lost colony of Roanoke? Say no more. Kindle deal for this one right now!

Mistborn: The Final Empire: Mistborn #1 by Brandon SandersonI’ve always been aware of this epic high fantasy series, so when April–who I know is a HUGE fan–tweeted that there was a kindle deal, I snapped it right up.

All three of these audiobooks came from the supremely awesome Sync series, where a YA title is paired with a summer reading classic each week FOR FREE.

Of Poseidon: Of Poseidon #1 by Anna Banks, narrated by Rebecca Gibel. I’m hit or miss with mermaids, guys, but I’ve heard good things about this series from others who are the same. I haven’t heard of this narrator, but I’m looking forward to giving it a go.

The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place, Book 1: The Mysterious Howling, by Maryrose Wood, narrated by Katherine Kellgren. I’ve had a print version of this book for awhile now, but haven’t read it yet. Hopefully this audio lights a fire under my ass. Plus, the narrator, Katherine Kellgren, is by all accounts AWESOME.

The Raven Boys: The Raven Cycle #1 by Maggie Stiefvater, narrated by Will Patton. I AM SO EXCITED about this audiobook. Mostly because I’m looking forward to rereading via audio before I dive into THE DREAM THIEVES ARC I got at BEA. WOOT!

  1. Wow, you got some amazing books to read! I’m really looking forward to reading Star Cursed and Siege and Storm. The Woodcutter sounds really interesting too. Enjoy!

  2. I’m so excited you got Mistborn! After Name of the Wind, that is my faaaavorite fantasy trilogy! It is blow-your-mind amazing. Every single time I think about how things come together in the end I get chills.

In other words, let me know when you start it, whenever that may be. I would love to know your thoughts!

  3. Awesome haul this week! I’m currently reading THE INFINITE MOMENT OF US and I like it. I think Wren is somewhat like I was at her age, so that’s probably definitely making my love for it stronger. Hope you end up liking it too!

  4. *faints from excitement* You have too many amazing books on this list!!! What is this… The Boy on the Bridge!? I’m curious!!!
I really loved The Trouble With Flirting! That’s an awesome summer book… Light, fun, and cute! 🙂

  5. WTF IS GOING ON?! How can you even cram Norse mythology and fairy tales into one book?! I don’t even know if I can handle it, but I desperately want to read The Woodcutter now.

I also just got Shadow and Bone. Don’t even know I’m going to feel about that one, saving it till last one’s out next year. Totally jealous you got to stop at book shops on your road trip. If I try this when the bf and I go on one in August, pretty sure I’ll be shot down…

  6. MISTBORN!!!!

    Great life choice!
