on the same page Unspoken • Sarah Rees Brennan

This is one of those times when there’s a book that’s been out for a while that none of us have read yet, which makes On the Same Page PERFECT! Because now we get to read things together! UNSPOKEN by Sarah Rees Brennan is one of those books, so we were all really looking forward to reading this one. There are some great visuals from this book, so I’ve created another Pinterest board. This one was a little harder for me than my previous Pinterest board, but still lots of fun! I’m going to highlight a few of my pins below and then send you off to my board (which I will continue to update) to see the rest. Huzzah!

Sorry-in-the-Vale

So, in UNSPOKEN, Sorry-in-the-Vale is described as a tiny, slightly weird little hamlet in the Costwolds where there is lots of fog. Ta da! Foggy Cotstwold’s village! The fog and the quaint out-of-the-wayness of Sorry-in-the-Vale lends a lot to UNSPOKEN‘s atmosphere, which is perfectly creepy and mysterious. I can just imagine Kami and Jared roaming the streets of this town.

The Glass House

Kami and her family live in a little cottage in Sorry-in-the-Vale right outside the woods. Their home is described as having a thatched roof, and there were plenty of pins of cottages in the Cotswolds with thatched roofs (I pinned some), but I kept coming back to this one as the picture that reminded me the most of their home: old, cozy, and if you look behind the roof of this home, in a wooded area. Kami and her family are, of course, very important to the story in UNSPOKEN and there are a number of scenes that take place in their home. My favorite is one where Kami and Jared have a sleepover. (Get your heads out of the gutter!)

Aurimere House

Obviously, TONS of important things happen at Aurimere House, ancestral home of the Lynburns. Jared feels trapped there, Kami feels unsafe there, Ash seems to fit in there but maybe we don’t know everything, and Rosalind, Lillian, and Rob Lynburn–the grown ups–have complicated relationships with each other, the townspeople, and their children. I wish I could’ve found a picture of a big manor house garden in a rainstorm because that’s an important scene in UNSPOKEN, but alas. You guys can imagine it, right?

The Vale Woods/The Crying Pools

There are several creepy epicenters of action in UNSPOKEN, and one of them is the Vale Woods, which is itself the home to the Crying Pools, the location in an old story related to the Lynburns that has a very strong drawing power over Jared. I pictured the Crying Pools much smaller, and obviously there’s more than one, but I couldn’t find an exact picture. But! Creepy, foggy woods = Sorry-in-the-Vale to a tee.

The Knives

The Lynburn family is in possession of some pretty badass red and gold knives and serve a sinister purpose. Not to mention, they play an important role in UNSPOKEN for Kami and Jared. Speaking of Kami and Jared, let me tell you how much I love them: A LOT. Kami is hilarious and ballsy, and Jared is broody and angsty and AMAZING. Obviously the fact that they can talk to each other in their heads is a big deal, but they have great chemistry in person, and their feelings are pretty deep, considering that they’ve been helping each other through lots of stuff since they were kids. Lots of feels with them!

The bell

There’s a pretty cool legend about the Sorrier River that wends its way through Sorry-in-the-Vale about the War of the Roses and how one of the Lynburns threw the bell from the bell tower at Aurimere House into the river to hide it from the winning side that was their rival.

The lift/elevator at the library

Last one! This one isn’t particularly important, but there’s a scene in the beginning of UNSPOKEN when Kami and Jared meet at the library and, since Jared spent most of his young life in America, the two have a conversation about lifts and elevators. Most importantly, this conversation is thrumming with tension and good things. It’s one of my favorites.
