Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner’s motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword’s point — he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. Waiting on Wednesday (22): Poison by Bridget Zinn

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly feature hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. I love it because it is basically a squee-fest where book lovers can choose one book that they are DYING to get their hands on. Check it out!

Poison

by Bridget Zinn

book cover for poison by bridget zinn

Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction—which means she’s the only one who can save it. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend.

But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart . . . misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she’s not alone. She’s armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can’t stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she’s certainly no damsel-in-distress—she’s the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon.

I am ALWAYS on the lookout for solid-sounding new fantasies, friends, and POISON by Bridget Zinn sounds like exactly that. The story of Kyra sounds not only full of fantasy goodness, but also emotional stress and complicated relationships, what with former best friends who are current heirs to the throne and ex-boyfriends who hang around. ALSO ALSO ALSO!! THERE’S A CUTE PIG!! AHHH! First of all, the little piggy is on the cover. Love it. Second of all, he also merits a mention in the synopsis, which means there’s a great chance of some important piggy moments in the book. (I love pigs. I think they’re adorable, especially baby ones.)

In fact, the only bummer about POISON is the fact that it’s the first and last book that we’ll likely ever get from Bridget Zinn–she passed away last year. Epic sad face. But her debut effort sounds wonderful, and I can’t wait to read it.

POISON is coming out March 12, 2013 from Disney Hyperion.

Bout of Books 6.0: Final Tally

BoB6.0-300x200

I’m so excited to be participating in Bout of Books 6.0! I’ve never participated in one before, so even though I know it’s going to be a little hard to find lots of time to read, I’m still looking forward to giving it a go and reading in whatever spare time I can find this week. I’ll be updating this post every day with the progress!

UPDATE: Here’s my final tally!!!

Reading Time

Speaking of spare time, I mostly have this in the evenings and on the weekends, so I’ll be doing most of my reading at night and on Saturday-Sunday. But I usually get a little time in the morning before I leave for work, so I’ll be reading a little bit then, too.

Goals

  • I want to read 4 books during this bout. I know that doesn’t sound like a lot, but trust me: the last time I read more than 1 book a week–before this week that just passed–was months ago. This is a big challenge for me.
  • Participate in at least one Twitter chat.
  • Comment on at least 10 blogs participating in the challenge

Nielsen Stealing Parker by Miranda Kenneally Just One Day by Gayle Forman Prodigy: Legend #2 by Marie Lu (this one’s a reread before I write my review) Graceling by Kristin Cashore (I’m in the process of a readalong, so I might pick this one up for a chapter or two. I’m listing it here, but I’m near the end and only have to read 5 chapters this week, so I won’t be finishing it during the bout) An Echo in the Bone: Outlander #7 by Diana Gabaldon (I’ve been listening to this one for a few weeks now, and I’ll still be listening to it this week)

In My Mailbox (57) / Stacking the Shelves (12)

in my mailbox stacking the shelvesWeek of January 12, 2013

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren. It’s awesome. Every week, we all get a chance to tell everyone what new books we’ve gotten so that we can tell you guys and we can all drool and squee together! Huzzah for squees! Stacking the Shelves is another weekly meme hosted by Tynga at Tynga’s Reviews. They’re both awesome memes and I love meeting all of you through them!

I’m trying to stick to my NetGalley resolution, friends. This week was small but AWESOME. Woot!

The Moon and More

Amazon | Goodreads

The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen (June 4, 2013 from Viking Juvenile).  I haven’t read ALL of Sarah Dessen’s books, but I’ve read a few, and I’ve enjoyed them. This one sounds typically emotional: it’s about a girl who is going off to college and is spending her last summer at home, where she has to figure out lots of stuff, including a BOY.

Book cover for Senshi by Cole Gibsen

Amazon | Goodreads

Senshi: Katana #2 by Cole Gibsen (March 8, 2013 from Flux).  I read and enjoyed the first book in this series, KATANA, about a girl who finds out that she is the reincarnation of a samurai warrior. It was pretty good, guys, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens to Raleigh/Senshi next when things kind of go south.

BOUGHT

Book cover for The Cadet of Tildor by Alex Lidell

Amazon | Goodreads

The Cadet of Tildor by Alex Lidell.  I already read this one, friends (review coming soon), and honestly, it was REALLY good. A very well-paced fantasy with good world-building and a pretty slow-burning (and I do mean slow) relationship. Good stuff.

Book cover for Just One Day by Gayle Forman

Amazon | Goodreads

Just One Day: Just One Day/Just One Year #1 by Gayle Forman. I just finished this book this morning and it is still basically all I can think about. It was basically perfect, if you like to read about imperfect people and things. Which I do. Because that’s real life, y’all. This books was outstanding.

That’s my mailbox for the last few weeks, friends! I hope you all got some great things, too!

Handbook for Dragon Slayers

by Merrie Haskell

Book cover for Handbook for Dragon Slayers by Merrie Haskell

When a runaway princess throws her lot in with a couple of would-be dragon slayers, before long she is facing down the Wild Hunt, befriending enchanted horses, battling fire-breathing dragons, and learning more about herself than she ever expected…

I can’t deal with how amazing this sounds, guys. A runaway princess, dragonslayers, enchanted horses. I DIE. Seriously. That little blurb is so freaking short, but I’m still fidgeting with anticipation. I read and very much enjoyed Merrie Haskell’s THE PRINCESS CURSE, which was a retelling of the 12 Dancing Princesses tale. But this one sounds like high fantasy at it’s best. PLUS. I love the cover! The illustration is so incredible!

HANDBOOK FOR DRAGON SLAYERS is coming out May 28, 2013 from Harper Collins.
