Top Ten Tuesday | 2015 Reads I Can’t Wait For

Top Ten TuesdayTop Ten 2015 Reads I Can’t Wait For

Friends, I had a very hard time stopping myself from letting this list get a little out of hand. I can’t lie. Ah, well. Not a bad thing, right? That just means that 2015 is going to be LEGIT for books. CANNOT WAIT. In no particular order except the one I wrote them down in on my little note today at work!

A Court of Thorns and Roses: A Court of Thorns and Roses #1 | Sarah J. Maas

May 5, 2015 • Bloomsbury Children’s

DUH. I about died when I saw these ARCs floating around, and the buzz I’m hearing from those lucky people who’ve read it already is only making me die more. Kind of need this one nowish.

I Was Here | Gayle Forman

January 27, 2015 • Viking Juvenile

I will perpetually look forward to Gayle Forman’s books. They’re contemps with romance and intense emotions and deep insights into basically life.

Six of Crows: The Dregs #1 | Leigh Bardugo

October 8, 2015 • Henry Holt & Co.

More books in the Grisha world? Well, don’t mind if I do. Also, the blurb says that this is Ocean’s 11 meets Game of Thrones. The Game of Thrones comparisons with every fantasy rarely seem to live up to that specific hype, but that’s not bad. I like books to be their own thing! That being said, YES TO THOSE TWO THINGS.

The Penderwicks in Spring: Penderwicks #4 | Jeanne Birdsall

March 24, 2015 • Knopf Books for Young Readers

I LOVE THE PENDERWICKS. It takes Jeanne Birdsall a few years to write each one, which makes each new release that much more of a gift. Plus, this one takes place five years in the future and is told from Batty’s point of view. BATTY. ADORBS. Also, I believe there is a war veteran in it. STAHP.

The Sword of Summer: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1 | Rick Riordan

October 6, 2015 • Disney Hyperion

Listen. All you have to say to me is “Rick Riordan” and “Asgard” and someone is going to have to resuscitate me. I am salivating for this.

Shadow Scale: Seraphina #2 | Rachel Hartman

March 10, 2015 • Random House Children’s

WORD I’ve been waiting for this one for so long! I’m going to need to reread SERAPHINA, but that’s no chore. I’m so excited to see what’s up with Seraphina and the dragons!

Fairest: The Lunar Chronicles #3.5 | Marissa Meyer

January 27, 2015 • Feiwel & Friends

Another DUH. It’s really hard–no, probably impossible–to like Queen Levana, but I’ll give her a chance.

Crimson Bound | Rosamund Hodge

May 5, 2015 • Balzer + Bray

Whoa, whoa, Little Red Riding Hood? Well, I just can’t say no to that ever. I really enjoyed CRUEL BEAUTY, so I’m excited to see what Rosamund Hodge has in store in this one.

The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate: Calpurnia Tate #2 | Jacqueline Kelley

July 7, 2015 • Henry Holt & Co.

OMG GUYSSSSS. I know I’ve mentioned before my love for Calpurnia Tate. I’ve been wishing and hoping that Jacqueline Kelley was going to write another book, and lo! IT’S HAPPENING! *happy dances*

The Young Elites #2 | Marie Lu

Pub date TBA • Putnam

I promise I’m going to post my review of THE YOUNG ELITES soon. Preview: I really, really enjoyed it and am full of THOUGHTS about what might be in store. It goes without saying that I’ll read whatever Marie Lu writes, and this is no exception.

Throne of Glass #4 | Sarah J. Maas

September 10, 2015 • Bloomsbury Children’s

That’s the UK pub date according to Goodreads, so let’s hope that the US pub date is earlier because I can’t even fathom the depth of awesomeness that is in store in this series. It’s no joke that Sarah J. Maas is on this list twice: She’s fabulous. I want all of her words.

Top Ten Tuesday | Books I Want to Reread

Top Ten TuesdayTop Ten Books I Want to Reread

GUYSSSS REREADING IS MY JAM. I love it. I LOVE IT. I’m constantly rereading books, sometimes in print, sometimes via audio, which is one of my favorite ways to reread. However I do it, I always wind up rereading at least 5 books every year. I have a few standard rereads–THE SCORPIO RACES, THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE, ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS, AMY & ROGER’S EPIC DETOUR–but I’m hoping to reread these 10 books, too. WOOO REREADS!!!!!

Top Ten Tuesday rereads

1. OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon. So I know people are in the midst of Outlander fever right now, which I totally get and is completely awesome. I’ve reread OUTLANDER once and got about halfway through DRAGONFLY IN AMBER before my attention was dragged away by something new. But watching the show has reignited my desire to reread these books.

2. LOVELY, DARK, AND DEEP by Amy McNamara. Are you guys sick of me mentioning this book yet? Yes, no? I need to get on my reread of this, but I think I’m going to wait for the wintertime. This book takes place in Maine in the winter and it’s such a perfect atmosphere. LOVE THIS BOOK.

3. Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. The books on this list are constantly on my mind, even after I’ve read them, sometimes years later. Immediately upon finishing HEIR OF FIRE I was like “OMG I NEED ALL OF THESE AGAIN.” I’ve got the audiobooks so I’m going to audio reread these in the new year. WHOOP!

4. THE BURNING SKY by Sherry Thomas. I need to reread this one before I pick up book 2. I very much enjoyed this alternate world fantasy. Definitely need to hop on the reread ASAP.

5. EVERY BREATH by Ellie Marney. Guys. MYCROFT. I CANNOT BECAUSE I DIE. This book was fantastic. Like, FABULOUS. I bought the first two from the Australian publisher and I just need to dive in again. AHHHH! Wonderful.

6. THE 5TH WAVE by Rick Yancey. I have my fingers crossed for this movie you guys because this book was so gripping and mind-fucking and excellent. I have book 2 in my piles somewhere ready to be under my nose.

7. SEA OF TRANQUILITY by Katja Millay.  Friends, what’s Katja been up to lately? THE SEA OF TRANQUILITY was raw and emotional and intense, and I loved it.

8. SERAPHINA by Rachel Hartman. DRAGONS ARE EVERYTHING. I’m beyond BEYOND excited for SHADOW SCALE, but it’s been a while so I am in need of and looking forward to a refresher.

9. TIGER LILY by Jodi Lynn Anderson. This is a book that I’ve reread passages of but never the whole thing. It was so lovely and heartbreaking that I probably have to be in the mood for it, but it’s so lovely and heartbreaking that I need to read it again.

10. SCARLET by A.C. Gaughen. Robin Hood WHAT! I need to reread this one before I read book 2 and, soon, book 3. I didn’t LOVE Scarlet right away, but ROBIN HOOD.

Top Ten Tuesday | Series I Want to Start

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Series I Want to Start

Friends, I have something like a compulsive series-starting problem. Or maybe a series-unfinishing problem. So finding new series that I haven’t started yet was actually really hard. There are a few newer series on here, but there are a good number of older ones, too. They are all series that I’m curious about and anxious to get reading!

Series1. Abhorsen by Garth Nix. I can’t believe I haven’t started this series yet. It’s honestly a little ridiculous. My bestie Alyssa keeps insisting that I start them, and my other bestie Brittany bought me SABRIEL. I will fix this.

2. Dreamdark by Laini Taylor. It goes without saying that Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series is one of my favorites. I have wanted to read Laini Taylor’s first series for a while now, even though fairies and I are sometimes love-hate. Hopefully because it’s Laini, this will be love.

3. The Demon’s Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan. This series always reminded me of Supernatural, so that makes me extra excited to read it. Now that I’ve read the first book (but, hello, not the next two) of Sarah Rees Brennan’s Lynburn Legacy books, I’m even more excited.

4. Something Strange & Deadly by Susan Dennard. If you guys know me even a little bit, you might know that zombies are not really my jam, and I hear that this is what’s going on–at least in some part–in this series. That being said, I still want to give it a try. I’ve always heard such good things!

5. Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins. Whenever I feel like reading something fun and humorous with a touch of paranormal goings on, I always think of Rachel Hawkins. This series, which revolves around ancient guardians known as Paladins, sounds even more up my alley than Rachel’s other books.

6. Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson.  I looooove the Mistborn series. I’ve been gearing up to listen to book 3 because the audio is excellent. But all of Brandon Sanderson’s books appeal to me. Can’t wait to start this one…eventually.

7. The United States of Asgard by Tessa Gratton. I’m sorry, did you say Vikings? STAHHHP I’M INNNNN.

8. Dissonance by Erica O’Rourke. I’ve heard LOTS of excellent things about this series, and HEY! It just started! The parallel universes angle sounds so interesting.

9. Antigoddess by Kendare Blake. Ooooh, dying gods? Unrest? Yes, please. I’ll take any and all mythology retellings that I can get my hands on.

10. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead. I tore through the Vampire Academy series a few summers ago. Like, couldn’t stop reading them once I started. I hear great things about this series, too. And hello, Adrian. *winks*

Top Ten Places Books Made Me Want to Visit

YAY I love this week’s Top Ten Tuesday! Friends, I love being able to visualize the settings of the books I’m reading. One of the bonus side effects of this is that I often find myself DYINGGG to visit the places these books describe, whether real or imaginary. I’ve got a mix of both here. Now, let’s all plan a vacation, mmkay?

places to visit

Westeros/Essos

Books: A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin

Umm, obvs I want to go to Westeros. But, like, it’s not really great there right now, guys. Everyone is fighting, no one is loyal to the right people at the right time, basically everyone dies, people are cray…the list goes on. If I could book a ticket there tomorrow, would I still? YOU BET.

places to visit

New Beijing

Books: The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I have to tell you, visiting Asia is not necessarily near the top of my list of places to go. No specific reason. But Marissa Meyer has created a completely shiny, realistically futuristic New Beijing, and I’d love to see it. Also maybe if I could run into Kai somewhere, that would be super.

places to visit

Les Cirque des Reves

Book: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Is it creepy that I want to go to Les Cirque des Reves? Not sure that I care. This place is so magical and indulgent and mysterious. I crave the opportunity to set foot in it myself and visit the tents and the Ice Garden and EVERYTHING. GAH NEED TO REREAD ASAP.

places to visit

Thisby

Book: The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

DUH. Also, this picture is EXACTLY EXACTLY how I picture Puck’s house, as well as the beach where the races take place. Thisby remains one of the most vividly realized imaginary places I’ve ever read, maybe because it seems like it could be so real and exist in our world. I would MOVE to Thisby if it were real. I would, I would.

places to visit

Iceland

Book: Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

Ah, now we get to the ACTUAL PLACES portion of the list. Iceland isn’t somewhere that’s always been on my vacation radar, but it’s most certainly a place I want to visit now that I’ve read BURIAL RITES. It’s so stark and lovely and fiercely beautiful there. At least, all the pictures look that way.

places to visit

Paris

Books: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins | Just One Day by Gayle Forman

So I’ve been fortunate in my life to have visited Paris three times. It’s the only place on this list that I’ve actually already been, but guys? It’s magic there. Like, the air is full of magic fairy dust (SHHHH, that’s not smog). Every time I read a book set there it makes me want to go back.

places to visit

Prague

Book: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Literally every picture I’ve ever seen of Prague is gorgeous. I’m dying to go there. DYING.

places to visit

The Cotswolds

Book: Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

Ahh, look at this nice, sunny picture! The Cotswolds as they are described in Sarah Rees Brennan’s book aren’t as friendly-looking, but it still looks like an incredibly cozy, beautiful place to visit. I’d go there, but stay far away from the woods. You know?

places to visit

Maine

Books: The Penderwicks at Pointe Mouette by Jeanne Birdsall | Lovely, Dark, and Deep by Amy McNamara

Maine will turn up on every single list like this, friends. It’s only a few hours from me, but I’ve never been. I’m so drawn to the rocky beaches and the chill in the air and the quiet woods. It’s an Amy kind of place, friends.

places to visit

Edinburgh

Book: The Falconer by Elizabeth May

Yes, THE FALCONER takes place in historical Edinburgh. But Scotland is basically my holy grail of places to visit, and this book made Edinburgh even more appealing to me.

places to visit

Scottish Highlands

Books: Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon

THE HIGHLANDS OMG. GET ME HERE. MY BODY IS READY. PLEASE. DON’T MAKE ME BEG ALTHOUGH I TOTALLY WILL. Ahem. So, you get it, I’m assuming.

Top Ten Tuesday (126) | Character-Driven Books

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Character-Driven Books

Friends, I always struggle when people say things like “character-driven” because I feel like all books are character-driven in some way, but I think I’ve come up with a pretty good list of books that really focus on the people instead of the plot. For me, books that are character-driven are inherently about relationships, so these 10 books feature some intense, real (and therefore difficult and sometimes flawed) ones. I’ve definitely read and LOVED all of these books–legit some of them are forever favorites–so YAY! YAY FOR CHARACTERS!

character-driven novelsI haven’t had a chance to post my review of this book yet, but it was a really poignant, wonderful look at sibling relationships, specifically sisters. Sister relationships always appeal to me hugely, and Josie and Kate have a typical sister relationship: good, but not perfect, and it’s changing now that Kate is engaged to be married. I thought their rough patch was totally believable and just a little heartbreaking. Funny, too.

character-driven novelsAny book by Morgan Matson is, I think, more about the characters than the things they are doing or that are going on around them, but SECOND CHANCE SUMMER perfectly depicted the relationship between a father and a daughter, Robin and Taylor. Without their understated but very strong connection, the emotional heft of this story would’ve been negligible. Well, maybe not negligible because cancer, but still.

character-driven novelsI LOOOVE reading about soldiers, friends, and Travis is dealing with some intense demons and a frightening case of PTSD when he arrives back home. Watching Travis come to grips with the death of his friend while on tour in the Middle East and with his family makes SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL amazingly satisfying and moving. Also, HELLO, HARPER. Their relationship is outstanding.

character-driven novelsThe fact that LOVE LETTERS TO THE DEAD is written entirely in letter format doesn’t impact the way Laurel’s grief over her sister May’s death drives the whole story. This book is about sisters and parents and friends and more-than-friends, and Laurel wades through all of these relationships admirably.

character-driven novelsI think I’m going to reread LOVELY, DARK, AND DEEP very soon. It’s been almost two years since I read it last and I think of it all the time to this day, no lie. That’s because Wren and Cal are complex and wounded, and the two of them finding each other and growing is really special.

character-driven novelsYou guys, Jandy Nelson knows how to write exceptionally real characters. Noah and Jude are amazingly well-realized. Their sibling relationship is broken, and neither of them seem in the right place to fix it. But they aren’t the only characters who make I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN brilliant: Brian, Oscar, and Guillermo all impact the story in their own indelible ways, and together they make this book fabulous.

character-driven novelsUmm, OF COURSE a book about Tiger Lily and Peter Pan is going to be character-driven, especially when it’s this book. Tiger Lily is an outstanding character. She’s fierce and strong and imperfect, and her relationship with Peter is not all fluffy clouds and rainbows and hearts for eyes. When a book is named after a character like TIGER LILY is, you expect it to delve deeply into who that character is, and we get all up in Tiger Lily’s business. But even when we do, she’s still a mystery in a lot of ways. I love her.

character-driven novelsSo, ok, Marie Lu’s Legend series is pretty plot-driven. I’ll give you that. But who would care one whit about the plot if Day and June weren’t a part of it? Not me. They are so different: charming, confident Day and steady, determined June. Despite their differences, they work together, and the story is better because of them.

character-driven novelsReally, both of the books in this series would belong on this list, but I liked JUST ONE DAY a little better, so that’s the one I’m highlighting here. Allyson is one of those characters that draws you in because so many of her troubles are the same kinds of things we deal or dealt with ourselves. And her day with Willem is so not just about the traveling. At all. It’s about them and what they grown to mean to each other in such a short time and how Allyson grows from that one day. Perfect character-driven stuff going on.

character-driven novelsThe ultimate, in my opinion. Every week when I’m thinking of my Top Ten Tuesday list, there’s one book that always comes to mind immediately, and ELEANOR & PARK was that book for me this week. Eleanor and Park obviously not only MAKE the story in ELEANOR & PARK, they ARE the story, and not just because the book is so clearly about them. They are the story because of who Rainbow Rowell made them and the way they slowly become friends and more, and the way they support each other. I’m going to reread this one soon, too. Because I miss them.

Top Ten Tuesday (125) | Fall TBR

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Books on My Fall TBR

Soooo, there was virtually NO CHANCE that I would be able to keep this post to just 10 books, friends. Way too many books that I’m dying to read coming out this fall! I’m absolutely LOSING MY SHIZZ over at least half of this list, I’ve preordered most of them, and am plain stoked about them ALL.

Top Ten Tuesday (124) | Top Ten Authors I’ve Only Read Once

Top Ten Tuesday

Ahhh, it’s nice to be back on the Top Ten Tuesday wagon, friends! And a pretty great topic to boot! There’s not as many authors that fit this list for me, but there are a few gaping holes in my reading. I tried not to cheat and put people who’ve only written one book on here, but I couldn’t always help myself.

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Authors I Own the Most

Woo I like this list, friends! You know why? Because my answers are going to be really different. A lot of times with Top Ten Tuesdays I feel like my answers are always the same books. Not this week! My most-books-owned authors are completely different from the norm. YAY! The only thing is that I only have nine authors here, and that’s because I had a TON of authors who I own the same number of books for and I didn’t feel like including them all here.

Top Ten TuesdayBooks owned: All 8 novels in the Bridgertons series

If you love historical romance, then don’t pass by Julia Quinn’s Bridgertons series. They’re seriously fun and funny and you’ll love this crazy huge family forever.

Top Ten TuesdayBooks owned: All 10 currently released Pink Carnation books

More historical romance! Huzzah! I’m two books behind with this series, but I love them. Very fun, very sexy, and they have a slightly different structure than most historical romances: there’s also a contemporary framing device. Not always my favorite part, but it’s something interesting!

Top Ten TuesdayBooks owned: All 7 Harry Potter books

Of course J.K. is on this list. I even own more than one copy of some of the Harry Potter books. Next purchase? AUDIOBOOKS. Bring it.

Top Ten TuesdayBooks owned: All 5 Percy Jackson books, 2 Kane Chronicles books, 4 Heroes of Olympus books

WOW, Rick Riordan has a lot of books out. Obviously, I love Percy Jackson. The Kane Chronicles wasn’t as good as the other two series, in my opinion, so I’m missing the last book in that series, but Percy and the Heroes of Olympus series are both excellent. I am dying for his Viking series, though. DYINGGGG VIKINGSSSS.

Top Ten TuesdayBooks owned: All 5 currently released A Song of Ice and Fire books, plus 3 graphic novels

WORD, I’m a fan of graphic novel versions of my favorite books. I still need to read these graphic novel versions, but I just like knowing I have them.

Top Ten TuesdayBooks owned: All 8 currently released Outlander novels, plus one audiobook

The 8th book in this series–one of my FOREVER favorites–just came out so I haven’t read it yet, but I already love the look of it. And obviously I’m beyond stoked for the show.

Top Ten TuesdayBooks owned: All 4 Wolves of Mercy Falls books, 4 copies of THE SCORPIO RACES (one audiobook, one eBook, two print), and the first 2 books in The Raven Boys series plus an audiobook of THE RAVEN BOYS

WHEW. So, I own lots of Maggie books. Mostly because I love her, and because THE SCORPIO RACES is one of my very favoritest books. I’ll be buying the audio of THE DREAM THIEVES as well for a reread.

Top Ten TuesdayBooks owned: All 21 currently released Stephanie Plum books

I’m way behind on reading these, but I do own them all. My mom and sister read these books, too, so they’re all caught up. I’m just about ready for this series to be finished, though.

Top Ten TuesdayBooks owned: the first 10 books in the Amelia Peabody series

I haven’t read books in this series in a long time, but they’re super fun. Historical fiction, Egyptology, mysteries. This series has 19 books in it, and they kind of follow the same structure, but the characters are whip-smart and funny. Good times!

Top Ten Tuesday (122) | Top Ten Movies & TV Shows

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Movies & TV Shows

I like this, friends! Changing it up from books and recognizing that great stories come in many media. Woo hoo! As someone who loves books AND TV AND the movies, I love this list. I broke it down into two separate mini lists, and deliberately cut it off at exactly 10 because this list could’ve EASILY gotten way out of hand.

TV Shows

Supernatural

One of my FAVORITE shows of ALL TIME. The Winchester brothers are broody and dark and their lives are twisted and sad and dangerous. LOVE THEM. Plus the paranormal aspects are legit, even if the show was better earlier in its run, IMO. It’s still amazing.

Once Upon a Time

I’m sorry, did you guys think I would leave off a show based on fairy tales? We know each other, right? #HookEm

The Vampire Diaries

It’s not cheating to have a TV show based on books on here, right? I mean, I’ve never read the books, but the show is addicting. I’m a little behind on this most recent season, but this is consistently one of the most dramatic shows around. Plus, Damon.

New Girl

So maybe season 3 wasn’t AS funny as the first two, but goodness gracious, friends, I LOL all the time watching this show. I need a Schmidt in my life. I mean, don’t we all?

Legend of Korra

I love the Avatar universe. It’s so captivating and fun. I love Korra a LOT because it’s like YA Avatar. It’s got the action and fighting, plus the emotions of relationships of all kinds.

Friday Night Lights

BEST SHOW EVER. That is all. (Legit, it’s probably my favorite show ever. Maybe a few other shows are bunched up with it, but this one is so close to the top.)

Movies

Almost Famous

I just love this movie to bits. It’s been one of my favorite movies ever since I saw it in the theater. I love the music and the time period and relationships.

Brave

While I LOVE Brave a  lot, it’s also basically a stand-in for ALL THE DISNEY MOVIES. There’s little I love more than indulging in my inner kiddo, and there’s no better way to do that then pop on a Disney movie.

Steel Magnolias

I’m from New Jersey, which is just about as opposite from Louisiana as you can get, but I’ve always loved this movie HARD. I love the friendships between these women. I laugh and I sob uncontrollably when I watch it. What better story could I ask for?

Ever After

More fairy tales, I know. But I know this movie like the back of my hand and have incredibly fond memories of it. I just love it. Angelica Huston is amazing at throwing zingers around, and I love Drew Barrymore in this. Sometimes she annoys me, but not here.

Top Ten Tuesday (121) | Book Cover Trends

Top Ten TuesdayTop Ten Book Cover Trends

I originally thought this topic would be difficult. I was wrong. There were a few recent trends in book cover design that I’d known I wanted to highlight here, but other than that, I was kind of at a loss. Until I went and looked through my TBR and that most excellent Listopia feature on Goodreads. THEN I discovered things that I forgot I’d noticed, or things that I didn’t realize happened more than once. Below are ten trends that I like, but there are more that I just didn’t have the time to include. There are several books that apply to more than one trend, as you might notice, and SO MANY BOOKS that I didn’t have room to include! To the pictures!

Top Ten TuesdayMirror Images

I noticed this trend when I first saw the cover for A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU, but then I remember that something similar was going on with THE VANISHING SEASON. ALIENATED is kind of the same deal–an image that is inverted from top to bottom, or different on the top and bottom. I like this. It’s visually interesting and a fun metaphor for whatever might be going on INSIDE.

Top Ten TuesdayIllustrated People

This one starts with ELEANOR & PARK, but it’s continuing on with GUY IN REAL LIFE and ONE MAN GUY. I will always, ALWAYS see the appeal of an illustrated cover. It’s one of my favorite trends of anything. I’d always be drawn to an illustrated cover over one with photos and models on it.

Top Ten TuesdayFeathers

This one popped out at me while I was scrolling through my TBR. I’m particularly fond of the illustrated feather on the cover for Ava Lavender, and it irks me a touch that the covers for FIRE & FLOOD and ANTIGODDESS are nearly identical. But I do love feathers. And I love how the feathers are all symbolic of the contents: Ava’s feather is whimsical and odd (for a feather), FIRE & FLOOD’s feather is a flame, and ANTIGODDESS’ feather is bleeding.
Top Ten Tuesday

Rainbowish/Ombre Things

I don’t know how else to describe this style element. It’s rainbowish, it’s colorful, it’s shiny, it’s ombre. So, all of those things. I’ve read none of these books, alas, so I don’t know how apropos they are of the stories, but they sure are pretty.

Top Ten TuesdayFrames

This one didn’t strike me until I went looking for similarities, and it struck me that there were a number of books recently released or still to come that had some kind of frame, whether it’s the deliberate shape of EGG & SPOON, the more ornate design of THE QUEEN OF THE TEARLING, or the dark edge of THE SUMMONING. Lots of other examples of this as well, and I like it. Makes the covers seem more like pieces of art.

Top Ten Tuesday

Vertical Titles

THIS ONE is a trend I LOVE. I LOVE when the titles are oriented differently. It’s LOTS of fun. I had to leave off a bunch of examples of this because I literally couldn’t fit any more images in my collage. But FUN. Top Ten Tuesday

Broken Titles

This is an interesting one, friends. Not sure if I LOVE love it, but I do like the way it looks. It’s a little weird to see what is normally a typesetting error done deliberately, and it is kind of jarring to read, but it does catch my eye. That’s likely helped along by the dark background and the vibrant text color, but still. (Also, MORE FEATHERS!)

Top Ten TuesdayShape Overlays

Shapes! This is an interesting way to turn what might otherwise be unspectacular covers into more visually catchy ones. And I like the way they are used differently on each: one to break up an image and a face, another to indicate some kind of barrier (the curtainy thing on DARK METROPOLIS), and another to change the vibe of the whole cover.

Top Ten TuesdayCalligraphy

CALLIGRAPHYYY!! I love calligraphy. I love it. I wish I could do it. I would read ANY book that had calligraphy–especially when it looks so handwritten and not like a clean font–on the cover. SALT & STORM is probably my favorite of the group, but I really do love them all. So, so gorgeous. MORE OF THIS, PLEASE!

Top Ten Tuesday Top Ten TuesdayWhite Covers

Guys, I LOVE this trend. I love it to bits and tiny pieces. White covers–or whitish covers–always grab my attention because they stand out so well, especially on a shelf. There’s not much that pops quite as much to my eye than white or very light colors. There are so many other covers that follow this trend that I didn’t include here, but it’s officially A Thing, and probably my favorite trend around right now.
